In the Fall of 2002, a group of Board Members and Administrators from three leading Bergen County school districts came together to form a grassroots group to identify issues and craft solutions facing school districts today. The participating school districts, Demarest, Ramsey, and Ridgewood, named this group “Dollar$ & Sense”.
Since then, this group has conducted extensive research, published position papers, and sponsored public forums, all focused on the issues facing schools, school children, and taxpayers . Although it is an independent grassroots group, Dollar$ & Sense has worked cooperatively with other organizations that share an interest in the issues facing public education.
Much testimony has been offered in Trenton and at regional meetings. Dollar$ and Sense joined the litigation contesting the School Funding Reform Act. Amicus briefs were filed and accepted by the State Supreme Court. Moving ahead, we will continue to focus on providing constructive analysis leading to suggested solutions.
We will actively look to increase our membership, without any intention to be competitive with other organizations. Each organization does something different and each thing we do is necessary. Our message will be that all organizations have strengths. We need to join all of those strengths if we are to be effective in achieving the goal we have in common: we all want the best possible educational opportunities for all children.
